ADVANCED METERING INFRASTRUCTURE (AMI) PROJECT
COMING TO YOUR HOME

To enhance the reliability of our water services and modernize our infrastructure, the City of Weston and the City of Sunrise have budgeted for upgrading water meters serving homes and businesses.

THE CITY OF WESTON COMPRISES TWO DEVELOPMENT DISTRICTS:
The Indian Trace Development District and the Bonaventure Development District.

BONAVENTURE DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT SECTION OF WESTON

For the residents and businesses in the Bonaventure (BDD) area of Weston.  This project is funded and managed by the City of Sunrise. As of November 2025, the City of Sunrise anticipates gas meter upgrades will begin in mid-December 2025, with water meter upgrades starting in Spring 2026.  For further details, contact the City of Sunrise at 954-572-2490.

INDIAN TRACE DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT SECTION OF WESTON

In the Indian Trace Development District (ITDD) part of Weston, the Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI-ITDD) Project mirrors the City of Sunrise Utilities project in the Bonaventure Development District (BDD). Both cities are working with the same contractor, Core & Main, LLC.

The Indian Trace portion of Weston, as part of the AMI-ITDD project, is scheduled for December 1, 2025. This project is funded and managed by the City of Weston.

The City of Weston's contractor and its subcontractor, EnvoCore, will begin with an Audit Phase in December, consisting of a meter-by-meter field review of approximately 17,000 residential and commercial water meters. During this phase, each meter location will be visited, conditions noted, and measurements taken to ensure that the actual water meter upgrades occur smoothly and efficiently at a later date in 2026. We will update this page with the definitive installations dates as they become available.

Technicians will be easily identifiable by their EnvoCore branded shirts and will wear picture IDs for easy identification, as do City Public Works personnel. They will adhere to all safety protocols and will respect your privacy during the survey and installation process. We kindly request your cooperation in granting access to your utility meters. This will ensure the collection of accurate data, followed by the proper installation of new meters. No one needs access to your home.

 Water Meter Replacement

Video - What to Expect

The video below, created by the City of Sunrise, provides excellent information on what to expect during the water meter replacement process.  For residents in the Bonaventure area, the entire video pertains to you.  For residents in the Indian Trace Development District, everything about the process is the same, however you will contact the City of Weston with any questions or concerns.

Benefits of the New Smart Meters

An Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system offers significant advantages for both customers and utilities, providing real-time data, improved efficiency, faster leak detection, and enhanced water management and conservation.

Benefits for Customers

faucetWater and Cost Savings: Timely leak detection and access to usage data enable customers to identify and repair leaks promptly (e.g., a running toilet or a faulty irrigation system) before they result in expensive, unexpected bills.

faucetEmpowered Water Management: Customers can access their own hourly or daily water  consumption data via online portals. This transparency enables them to make informed decisions to reduce their consumption.

faucetEnhanced Customer Service: Utility staff have immediate access to detailed usage data, enabling them to answer customer questions and resolve billing disputes quickly and with facts.

faucetProactive Alerts: Many systems allow customers to set up personalized email or text alerts for unusual usage patterns or when consumption exceeds a certain threshold, providing peace of mind.

Benefits for Utilities

  • Operational Efficiency: AMI systems automate data collection, eliminating the need for manual meter readings, which reduces labor, equipment, and fuel costs (fewer "truck rolls") and reduces their carbon footprint.
  • Accurate and Timely Billing: Utilities receive frequent, exact usage data, resulting in consistent billing cycles, fewer errors, and fewer customer disputes.
  • Rapid Problem Detection: The system immediately notifies the utility of potential issues, such as leaks, backflow, or tampering, allowing for quicker diagnosis and response, and preventing minor issues from escalating into costly problems.
  • Access to Real-Time, Comprehensive Data: Enables utilities to understand consumption patterns better, optimize water pressure, refine demand forecasts, and manage the overall water distribution system more effectively.
You Have Questions and We Have Answers!

Is there a cost or monthly fee for the new meter:  NO

There is NO direct cost for a new meter that will be installed for property owners.
The Indian Trace Development District (ITDD), a dependent District of the City of Weston, owns and maintains the water infrastructure in the ITDD area of the city. This infrastructure includes such things such as all the underground water mains and pipes, fire hydrants, water service lines to properties and the water meters. The maintenance for these items is already covered in the ITDD Service Charge on the typical Water Utility Bill.
