"If I were elected Mayor..." Essay Contest
Calling all 7th graders in Weston! The Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities are sponsoring a statewide essay contest titled, “If I were elected Mayor . . .”
This contest is offered to all seventh-grade students in public and private schools. Students are encouraged to learn and write about Home Rule, and how it affects their City.
Entries must be postmarked by January 18, 2019. Essays will be judged by a committee comprised of members from the Florida League of Mayors Board of Directors. The top three winners will receive a gift card and a joint resolution from the Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities, presented by the Mayor at a council/commission meeting of their municipality’s choosing.
Florida’s municipalities belong to the Florida League of Cities, an organization of local governments whose goals are to serve the needs of Florida’s cities and promote local self-government. The City may participate in several initiatives annually.
Annually in October
The City of Weston celebrates City Government Week annually with the kick off of the new program year for Weston University (which runs October – May) and the I Led the Pledge program, which features the participation of students of local elementary schools to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at City Commission meetings during the school year.
The US Converence of Mayors (USCM) is the official non-partisan organization of cities with a population of 30,000 or larger. Each city is represented by its chief elected official, the mayor. USCM initiatives include programs such as financial literacy, sustainability, and other programs of importance to local governments and the communities that they serve.
