Indian Trace Master Plan – A Preface

Have you ever had a vision?  And then put that vision to paper?  And then go on to build that vision?  That is exactly what Arvida did when they looked at its portion of the 27 square miles of cow pasture and swamp land that would one day become the City of Weston.

When Arvida’s Indian Trace Master Plan was prepared in the early 1970’s there were no residents from which to receive input, there was no Indian Trace Community Development District Board of Supervisors, there was no Weston City Commission.

The Master Plan was a developer’s work product to assist in obtaining land development entitlements from Broward County and to act as a statement of its vision and how that vision was intended to be accomplished.  The Master Plan anticipated four decades of development, “horse country” with equestrian trails, boating and fishing in the water bodies, schools and parks, and more. 

Arvida’s work product was exceptional, from its master planning to the lushly landscaped arterial roadways, a state-of-the-art stormwater management system, environmental stewardship, and ability to adapt to market conditions.

To make Arvida’s Master Plan fully livable it took the vision of the elected Indian Trace Community Development District Board of Supervisors to recognize and validate the Weston development could be a self-sustaining municipality.  It then took the vision of the first elected City Commissions to construct a police station, fire stations, fiercely advocate for the construction of additional public schools, and the construction of the parks.

The vision started long ago, and with Weston’s planning through its past, present and future iterations of its Strategic Value and Business Plan that vision will shine bright for generations to come.
