Broward Vaccination Rates Under 50%, Include Weston

Post Date:07/16/2021 9:00 AM

Broward County maintains records of the vaccination rates throughout Broward County. They do this, for one reason, so that they can respond quickly to an area where they see a need for additional outreach efforts if vaccination rates are not keeping pace with the surrounding areas.

Broward County did just that.  Weston has one of the seven zip codes in Broward County that is below the 50% vaccination rate and it came as a surprise to us.  Weston was contacted as one of our four zip codes within our boundaries, 33332 is at a vaccination rate of 46%, far below the surrounding areas in Weston, such as 33331 which is at 81%, and 33326 at 104%*, although 33327 is at 57%. It seemed unusual to them, as higher socioeconomic areas, with easy access to medical care typically see higher rates of vaccination.

* zip codes noting over 100% vaccination rate is due to individuals registering under an address in that zip code, that do not live there.  Examples are visitors in hotels, relatives staying with family, people in Time Shares and AirBNB's - getting vaccinated and using the address of the location in those zip codes, pushing the vaccination rate over the official population for the area.

For our part, Weston is partnering with the Florida Department of Health to host an additional pop-upCovid-19 Vaccine on July 24 at Weston Community Center Ages 12 & Up vaccination site at the Weston Community Center which will be held on July 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The second dose date is on August 14. We will continue to provide access to fact-based educational materials for our residents and the public to consume and encourage research of quality data and speaking with a family physician to make an informed decision.

On July 15, 2021, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated that “Misinformation poses an imminent and insidious threat to our nation's health.”  “We must confront misinformation as a nation. Lives are depending on it.”

In a 22-page advisory, Murthy wrote that bogus claims have led people to reject vaccines and public health advice on masks and social distancing, undermining efforts to end the coronavirus pandemic and putting lives at risk.

While some groups that push health misinformation do so for profit, Murthy wrote that many Americans may be spreading false information without realizing it.  This statement is essential for all of us - check sources of information before sharing it or believing it.  Call your doctor.

“Misinformation hasn’t just harmed our physical health — it has also divided our families, friends, and communities," Murthy wrote in the advisory.

“The only way to address health misinformation is to recognize that all of us,
in every sector of society, have a responsibility to act.”
