Public Works - Highlights

A deep dive into the Public Works Department exposes an organization with strategic planning, and likely many functions you are unaware of, to keep a City of almost 70,000 operating smoothly every day.

So first off, let's explain what the Department of Public Works takes care of. The Public Works Department is responsible for the management and maintenance of the City's infrastructure. The City infrastructure includes: all publicly owned roadways, sidewalks, bridges, traffic signs and streetlights; city buildings and facilities; the stormwater management system, consisting of a complex network of the drainage structures, pipes, culverts, lakes, canals and pumping stations; over 200 miles of water transmission and distribution mains; approximately 200 miles of wastewater pipes and forcemains; wastewater lift stations; and wetland mitigation areas.

Additionally, the department also administers and oversees: the Solid Waste & Recycling contract; the City's fleet maintenance program; Facilities Maintenance, the Geographical Information System (GIS); the National Flood Insurance Program, the Capital Improvement Program, Sustainability and Asset Management.

As you can see, this is A LOT.  In layman's terms, we like to explain it like this:  If the water comes out of the faucet without you thinking about it - they are doing their job.  If firefighters can get to you after a hurricane knocks down trees in the roadway - they are doing their job. They are first responders too. 

Within Public Works there are Divisions, and they are broken down by the following: 

Streets/Drainage/Lakes     

In 2024, they completed 328 Preventive Maintenance Work Orders and 1,266 Repair Orders. 

Utilities (Water/Sewer)

In 2024, they completed 304 Preventive Maintenance Work Orders and 2,465 Repair Orders.

Engineering/Capital Projects

Facilities 

In 2024, the completed 452 Preventative Maintenance Work Orders, and 716 Repair Orders. 

A Department this complex has to have a plan.  Many plans in fact, and they do.  Public Works utilizes the latest technology to map and plan for the future in fact and to track progress throughout the year. 

They utilize Geographical Information Technology (GIS) with which the Public Works Department track items such as the City's Sidewalk Pressure Cleaning Schedule.  They can tell you EXACTLY what sidewalk was cleaned, when, and where. It makes sense that this kind of detail would be necessary with a City the size and scale of Weston. 

The Weston Public Works Department, under the leadership of Assistant City Manager/COO, Karl Thompson, P.E., and Public Works Director, Reddy Chitepu, P.E., are responsible for the management of the Capital Improvement Program for the City of Weston.  Capital Improvement Projects range from the design and construction of one park bathroom, to an entire park.  As you drive around the Weston, take note of bicycle lanes being added, parks being enhanced, traffic mast arms being installed, or drainage being improved.  This is all a day in the life of your Public Works professional.
