FAA Extends Comment Period to July 24th on the
Draft
Environmental Assessment for South-Central Florida Metroplex
Proposed Air Traffic Changes

South-Central Florida Metroplex (FAA's NextGen initiative)

Part of the FAA's efforts to modernize our nation's air transportation system, known as NextGen or Next Generation Air Transportation System, are a series of Metroplex areas.  By consolidating metropolitan areas with multiple airports and complex air traffic patterns into a single Metroplex, the FAA intends to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in major metropolitan areas across the country. Metroplexes provide a successful way to de-conflict airspace in congested areas with multiple airports.

With a goal to increase the safety, efficiency, capacity, predictability, and resiliency of aviation in the United States, the NextGen overhaul brings together innovative technologies, capabilities, and procedures that aim to improve air travel. The FAA has completed or is at some point in the study, design, evaluation, or implementation phase for 12 metroplexes - including the South-Central Florida Metroplex.

The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking public input on the following project that impacts the Miami / Fort Lauderdale area.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended to July 24, 2020 the comment period on the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the South-Central Florida Metroplex, the agency’s plan to modernize air traffic procedures for 21 airports in the southern half of the state.

The public can review the Draft EA and submit comments on this page. Residents who were unable to participate in the virtual public workshops on the project can view recordings of the workshops at Community Involvement South Central Florida.

The 60-day public comment period was scheduled to end on July 10, 2020. The FAA will not extend the comment period past July 24.

The agency expects to issue an environmental determination in September 2020, after it considers and reviews all substantive comments received during the extended comment period.

The proposed new procedures will enhance safety and efficiency because they are based on satellite technology. Current procedures are safe, but they are less efficient because they are based on outdated technology.

The agency conducted the Draft EA in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), which requires the FAA to identify and publicly disclose the potential environmental impacts of the proposed procedures.

We respectfully request if you included information on the South-Central Florida Metroplex on your websites that you update those as well with the new comment period closing date.  We further ask that you distribute this notification to others on your staff for their awareness.  Please also feel free to share this information with your constituents.

Michael C. O’Harra
