City Receives Top Fire Protection Rating
City leaders, administration and Fire officials are incredibly proud of the recent notification by the Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), that effective May 1, 2019 the City of Weston and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services will continue its Public Protection Classification Rating of 1. This is the highest rating attainable.
Weston is one of only 348 cities/departments in the Country to attain a Class 1 rating out of the 41,177 that were rated. Weston is one of only 34 cities/department in Florida with a Class 1 rating and we did not achieve this accomplishment alone.
The stringent criteria were met due to a variety of factors including Weston’s contractual relationship with BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, the City’s investment in equipment and the City’s infrastructure including the water supply and distribution system. The City scored 96.96 out of a possible 105.50 points, which is at the top of the scoring range.
ISO is the leading supplier of data and analytics for the property/casualty insurance industry. Most U.S. insurers use the Public Protection Classification information as a part of their decision making on offering coverage and the fees charged for the coverage of personal or commercial property insurance.
What Does It Mean To Homeowners or Business Owners?
The Public Protection Classification (PPC®) program provides important, up-to-date information about municipal fire protection services in each community; they analyze the relevant data at each location and assign a Public Protection Classification — a grading from 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire suppression program does not meet ISO’s minimum criteria.
Most U.S. insurers of home and business properties use ISO’s PPC in calculating premiums. In general, the price of insurance in a community with a good PPC is lower than in a community with a poor PPC, assuming all other factors are equal.
A community’s PPC depends on:
A direct benefit of a Class 1 rating is continued reduction in fire insurance premiums, particularly for businesses and commercial properties. It also shows that your Fire Rescue Department meets the most stringent of criteria to provide you with the best possible service. It is anticipated that the ISO score will increase even more when the new Bonaventure Fire Station is operational.
City Manager John Flint thanked Chief Fernandez and his staff for their commitment to excellence in service, and especially to all the men and women of Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services who respond to our residents and visitors in their time of need.
