You know when you have entered into the City of Weston.  

The difference in the lush landscaping is evident from every entrance into the City. 

That beauty doesn't happen by chance. Behind every tree, flowering bed and meticulously maintained streetscape is a thoughtful vision that ensures each element contributes to a cohesive landscape throughout the community.

For the last thirteen years, that vision belonged to Landscape Director Thaddeus Bielecki, whose leadership has helped shape one of the City's most recognizable and enduring features. As he prepares for retirement, his legacy can be seen in every beautifully landscaped roadway, park and city entrance throughout Weston.

Known to his colleagues as Thad, he and his small team are responsible for designing, directing and overseeing, the installations and maintenance of all the landscaping located on the City's public property, including parks, and all public rights-of-way including berms, swales and medians.

The tree canopy in Weston is a significant environmental asset. It is a large, and beneficial infrastructure investment for the City. As governments worldwide seek ways to combat climate change and improve public health, the value of such natural resources has become increasingly apparent.

In a huge undertaking during Thad's tenure, a Tree Inventory was completed and mapped with the use of GPS.  It is updated monthly still today.  This inventory ensures that the City can be reimbursed for trees that are damaged and removed due to a hurricane or other disaster, as FEMA requires proof of its existence and size prior to the storm. Weston's trees on public property number over 41,000, removing almost 11.59 tons of air pollution annually, reduce surface runoff to an estimated 8.45 million gallons a year, and gross sequestering about 288.9 tons of carbon per year.  Basically, Weston breaths much better because of it. 

What has Thad Bielecki meant to Weston?  City Manager Don Decker, provided insight at the July 6, 2026 Commission Meeting where he was recognized.  That evening Mr. Decker read the following.

"Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioners — tonight I want to take a moment to recognize someone who has meant a great deal to this city — and to so many of us who have had the privilege of working alongside him.

When we set out to recruit a Director of Landscaping for Weston, we knew we weren't looking for just any professional. Weston is a special place that has always held itself to a higher standard. We wanted someone who understood resort-quality landscaping. Someone who could look at a median, city building, or a public greenway and see not just grass and trees, but an experience.

So we went looking. And what we found, at the El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico, was Thad Bielecki.

I still remember what struck us when we visited that property. The grounds were immaculate. The plantings were lush and intentional. There was a care evident in every detail — the kind you can't fake and can't mandate. It was woven into everything. That was Thad's work.

Thirteen years later, Thad brought that tropical island resort experience to the City of Weston.

Thad didn't just maintain what we had. He transformed it. He brought color to our corridors and character to our green spaces. He championed the reintroduction of native orchids throughout our city. In a region where so much of the natural landscape has been paved over and forgotten, Thad gave something back. Those orchids are growing today because one person cared enough to make it happen.

But beyond the projects and the plantings — beyond everything residents see when they drive through this city — what I'll remember most is the person. Thad brought a quiet professionalism and a genuine love for this work that inspired everyone around him. That kind of dedication is rare. It doesn't show up in a budget line. But you feel it everywhere.

Thad, you came to us from a beautiful island, and you brought a piece of that spirit with you. Weston is greener, more colorful, and more alive because of your thirteen years of service.

On behalf of the City Commission, our staff, and every resident who has ever paused to admire a flowering tree or spotted an orchid along a Weston pathway — thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. We wish you a retirement filled with every bit of the beauty you gave to us."

Residents and visitors alike will enjoy Thad's artistry for many years to come.  Assistant Landscaping Director Andy  Matusevich will take the reins when Thad leaves for his much deserved retirement. Residents can feel assured that the standards of the last 13-years will continue with Andy's leadership. 

We wish Thad and his family health and happiness in the years ahead.  While he may retire, Thad's love for plants, in particular orchids will continue.  An accomplished international orchid judge, he will no doubt continue to bring the love of nature and Orchidaceae to many, for years to come.
