City Commission and Chief Cavalieri honor BSO Weston Detective Reynoldo Wellington 

The City of Weston recognized Broward Sheriff's Office Detective Reynoldo Wellington as the July 2026 Police Employee of the Month for his outstanding investigative work that led to the arrests of two suspects involved in an attempted occupied residential burglary in the Laguna Springs community.

The incident occurred on May 12, when deputies responded to a report of an attempted burglary at an occupied home. According to investigators, two suspects tried to force open the home's rear sliding glass door while the homeowner was inside. Hearing the commotion, the resident approached the door, causing the suspects to flee before gaining entry.

Although deputies were unable to locate the suspects during an extensive search of the area, they canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. Their efforts uncovered video from a nearby home security camera that captured the suspects fleeing the scene. While one suspect concealed his identity with a hooded sweatshirt, the second suspect's face was clearly visible.

Assigned to the case, Detective Wellington immediately reviewed the surveillance footage and created a flyer featuring images of the suspects. He then spent several days walking through the neighborhood, speaking directly with residents in an effort to identify them. Community members provided valuable information, indicating that one of the suspects was believed to be a juvenile from a nearby neighborhood who frequently visited Lakes Plaza shopping center with other local teens.

Recognizing an opportunity on the last day of the school year, when students typically gather at Lakes Plaza after classes end, Detective Wellington visited the shopping center to continue his investigation. By building a positive rapport with the students there, he was able to obtain the juvenile suspect's name. That information led to the suspect's identification, arrest on June 4 and a full confession. Investigators later identified and arrested the second suspect, successfully closing the case.

City officials praised Detective Wellington for combining traditional investigative techniques with strong community engagement to solve the case.

"During this investigation, Detective Wellington utilized effective old-school police work techniques by getting out in the community and generating key investigative leads that ultimately resulted in the identity and arrest of the offenders," said BSO Weston District Chief Barry Baker during the City Commission meeting.

Detective Wellington was recognized as the July 2026 BSO Law Enforcement Employee of the Month for his initiative, persistence and commitment to protecting the Weston community through proactive police work and meaningful community partnerships.
