Lieutenant Michael Wagener was appointed Executive Officer (XO) of the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) Weston District on February 21, 2026. He succeeds Lt. Chris Pennetti, who was recently transferred to oversee operations at the airport. Lieutenant Wagener brings a broad range of law enforcement and leadership experience to the Weston community.
Lieutenant Wagener earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Florida International University. He holds two Graduate Certificates from Florida International University: one in Homeland Security and Emergency Management and another in Human Resources Policy and Management. In addition, he is a graduate of the FBI LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute, Command Leadership Institute, and Executive Leadership Institute, earning the distinguished FBI LEEDA Trilogy Award.
Lt. Wagener began his law enforcement career with the Hollywood Police Department before joining the Broward Sheriff’s Office. At BSO, he initially served as a road patrol deputy and later as a detective in the Oakland Park District. Lieutenant Wagener subsequently joined the Regional Criminal Investigations Division as a detective in the Violent Crimes Unit.
After being promoted to Sergeant, Lt. Wagener served as a patrol supervisor before returning to the Criminal Investigations Division to supervise the Violent Crimes Unit. Following his promotion to Lieutenant, he continued working in the Criminal Investigations Division, first as the Major Crimes Section Manager and later as the Violent Crimes Section Manager. In these roles, he oversaw the Homicide Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, Missing Persons Unit, and Cold Case Unit.
Prior to his assignment in Weston, Lieutenant Wagener served as Executive Lieutenant for the City of Cooper City.
But who is the person behind the uniform?
Lt. Wagener is married to his wife, Jeanette, who is a local tax attorney. Their household includes two beloved dogs, Madeleine, a Beagle, and Truffles a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
As a family they like to travel, exploring new restaurants, and attend sporting events.
Asked about about his favorite sports teams, Lt. Wagener shared that he is a devoted fan of the UCF Knights and the Florida Panthers. He also enjoys watching college football and ice hockey in general.
When asked if he had a message for Weston residents and businesses, Lt. Wagener said, "I am excited to become part of the Weston community and am committed to engaging with our residents and building relationships."
