The City of Weston proudly recognizes BSO Weston Fire Rescue Employees of the month, for their quick response and lifesaving efforts that helped save the life of a student athlete.

On a recent afternoon at one of our local parks, an 18-year-old student-athlete participating in a competitive soccer match collided with another player and suddenly collapsed, going into cardiac arrest. The teen had no known medical history and was not taking any medications, making the incident both unexpected and life-threatening.

Bystanders immediately sprang into action. One individual recognized the emergency and called 911, another began high-quality CPR, and a third quickly retrieved one of the City of Weston’s publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs and used it on the teen, following the voice prompts.

These rapid actions completed the first four of the six links in the Chain of Survival: early recognition, immediate activation of 911, bystander CPR, and rapid defibrillation.  Within minutes, the fifth link, the responding crew of the Broward Sheriff's Office, including Captain Jean-Paul Rebour, Driver Engineer Jeffrey Acevedo, Lieutenant Paul Vassel, Firefighter Paramedics Jose Pan, James Hall, and Lucas Moura, arrived on scene and immediately assumed patient care.

The crew confirmed the patient had regained a pulse and was beginning to regain consciousness. They continued advanced life support treatment to stabilize the patient, and recognizing that the cardiac arrest resulted from a traumatic mechanism, activated the trauma alert protocol. Air Rescue was requested to land at the park, and the crew prepared the patient for rapid transport while initiating interventions designed to prevent a return to cardiac arrest. 

Their coordinated, efficient care ensured the final link in the Chain of Survival, rapid transport to the most appropriate trauma center.

Thanks to seamless teamwork between prepared bystanders and highly trained first responders, the young patient spent only a few days in the hospital and has since returned home, resuming his normal activities, including playing soccer. This remarkable outcome demonstrates the power of community preparedness, rapid emergency response, and professional excellence working together.
