The City of Weston proudly recognizes BSO Weston Law Enforcement Sergeant Steve Barreto, for his quick response and lifesaving efforts.

On Wednesday, December 3^rd, Sgt. Barreto was in the San Simeon community and heard a 911 hang-up call for service being dispatched in the same community.

911 hang-up calls are frequently received by Communications, most due to accidental or pocket-dialed calls.  Because of the many reasons why a 911 call would be placed, they are treated as high priority calls for service, often with deputies not knowing what they are responding to, or the severity of the incident.  Sgt. Barreto hearing this call being dispatched, immediately responded to the address and upon arrival in the area, encountered neighbors standing out front pointing and directing him to the house.  Upon exiting his vehicle, Sgt. Barreto immediately heard loud screaming coming from within the house and observed the front door wide open.  As he approached the open door, an adult female was inside directing him into the kitchen.

Once in the kitchen, Sgt. Barreto observed a female juvenile extremely distraught and upset sitting on the floor.  Appearing to be suffering from a mental health crisis, Sgt. Barreto’s first intentions was to try and de-escalate the situation and attempted to communicate and calm the juvenile down.  While doing so, without warning, the juvenile reached into a drawer and removed a large knife, placing it against her neck.  Observing this life-threatening act, without hesitation, Sgt. Barreto grabbed her arm holding the knife, and body to restrict her movement, while disarming her and placing her into handcuffs.  

Additional back up deputies responded to the scene, along with fire rescue. Fortunately, she did not sustain any injuries.  Due to her mental state and life-threatening actions, she was placed into custody under a Baker Act and transported to an area hospital where she received much needed treatment.

Sgt. Barreto’s response to this 911 call quickly placed him in a critical situation that could have easily resulted in serious bodily harm or death.  His initial assessment and decisive actions quickly neutralized the juveniles attempts to harm herself or others.
