Community Safety Alert: Illegal Wi-Fi and Cell Signal Jammers
Advancements in technology have unfortunately provided criminals with new tools to defeat home and business security systems. One such tool is a Wi-Fi or cellular signal jammer, sometimes referred to as a signal disruptor. These devices are designed to interfere with wireless communications, including security systems that rely on Wi-Fi or cellular signals.
While the use, sale, and possession of signal jammers is prohibited under federal law, these devices can still be found for sale online and are becoming a growing concern nationwide. Recently, a Wi-Fi signal jammer was recovered from a residential burglary suspect in Weston, underscoring the importance of community awareness.
What Is a Wi-Fi or Cell Signal Jammer
A Wi-Fi or cellular jammer is an illegal electronic device that intentionally disrupts wireless communications. It works by transmitting radio signals on the same frequencies used by Wi-Fi routers, cellular networks, and some wireless security systems. This interference overwhelms legitimate signals, preventing devices from connecting or communicating properly.
Why are Signal Jammers a Concern?
Many modern security systems rely on Wi-Fi or cellular signals; their popularity has surged because they are less costly to purchase and eliminate the need for extensive installation, further driving down costs and improving efficiency. They have become the go-to choice for homeowners and renters.
When a security system relies solely on wireless communication, a jammer can disable its ability to send alerts or connect to monitoring services. With the system effectively silenced, intruders can then attempt to enter a residence, business, or other facility without triggering an alarm.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Property
The Broward Sheriff’s Office recommends that residents and businesses review their current security systems and consider systems that include hard-wired security system components. Hard-wired systems are not vulnerable to signal jamming and provide more reliable protection.
In addition, using multiple layers of security may help to reduce risk. These measures can include fencing, exterior lighting, motion sensors, video surveillance cameras, and intrusion alarms. Layered protection increases the likelihood that if one safeguard is compromised, another will still deter or detect criminal activity.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and consult with licensed security professionals to ensure their systems provide the highest level of protection available.
