Safe Storage and Charging of E-Bikes and E-Scooters

The popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters has surged in recent years, offering an affordable, eco-friendly, and convenient mode of transportation. This raises a very real safety concern: the lithium-ion batteries that power these devices can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if mishandled. Fires involving these batteries burn extremely hot, release toxic gases, and spread quickly, making prevention critical.

Why UL-Listed Equipment Matters

One of the most important safety steps is purchasing and using only equipment that has been UL-listed (tested by Underwriters Laboratories or another nationally recognized testing lab). UL standards ensure that devices include safeguards such as overcharge protection, temperature monitoring, and proper circuit design. Non-listed or counterfeit products often lack these protections and are frequently linked to fires.

Charging Safety Tips

When charging, follow these practices:

• Plug chargers directly into wall outlets — never into power strips or extension cords.
• Use only the charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Do not charge while sleeping or unattended; charge only when you are present.
• Unplug once fully charged to avoid overheating.
• Charge at room temperature — avoid charging below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
• Never charge more than one device per outlet to prevent circuit overload.

Safe Storage Guidelines

Where and how you store your e-bike or e-scooter matters:

• Keep devices away from exits, stairwells, and hallways so they don’t block escape routes.
• Store away from anything flammable, such as bedding, furniture, or drapes.
• Do not leave batteries in hot cars or direct sunlight and keep them out of reach of children and liquids.

Warning Signs – Stop Using Immediately

Stop using the device if the battery shows any of these danger signs:

• Unusual odor or color change
• Excessive heat or swelling
• Leaking fluids or corrosion
• Hissing, popping, or smoking
• Battery no longer holds a charge

If it is safe to do so, move the device outdoors and away from combustible materials. Never attempt to fight a lithium-ion battery fire yourself; leave the building and call 911.

End-of-Life & Disposal

Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in household trash. Recycling is always the best option. Take them to a certified battery recycling center or contact your local waste department for disposal instructions.

E-bikes and e-scooters offer incredible benefits, but they must be used responsibly. By buying only UL-listed products, charging safely, and recognizing warning signs, you can help prevent devastating fires and protect your family and community.
