To help ensure a safe environment within Weston parks for all visitors, the City has amended Chapter 100 of the City Code of Ordinances, specifically 100.03 Traffic and Motor Vehicles in Public Parks.

To keep our parks safe and enjoyable for everyone, the City has adopted an amendment restricting e-bikes and e-scooters to roads and designated parking areas when in a City park.

This measure reduces the risk of collisions with children, seniors, and pedestrians on trails, sidewalks, and fields, while still allowing riders to enjoy the convenience of these popular devices in safer, more controlled spaces and at a lower speed.

Prioritizing Safety in Our Parks

The recent amendment limiting e-bikes and e-scooters to roads and parking areas within city parks is an important step toward protecting all park visitors. Parks are designed as shared spaces for families, children, walkers, and joggers, and ensuring that everyone can enjoy them safely is our top priority.

Reducing Conflicts Between Users

E-bikes and e-scooters can travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles or pedestrians. By restricting them to the roadways and parking areas, it minimizes the risk of high-speed encounters in walking trails, playground paths, and other areas where children and seniors are most active. This reduces the likelihood of collisions and creates a calmer, safer environment.  Users of these devices must also comply with the posted 15mph speed limit, further enhancing a slower, safer environment for the user. 

Protecting Pedestrians and Vulnerable Populations

Many park visitors are young children, older adults, or individuals with mobility challenges. These groups are particularly vulnerable in close quarters with fast-moving vehicles and devices. Concentrating e-bike and e-scooter use in designated areas helps ensure that vulnerable users can enjoy the park without fear of sudden or unpredictable encounters.

Encouraging Responsible Riding

By defining where e-bikes and e-scooters can operate, and their speed, the city establishes clear rules of the road. This encourages responsible use while still allowing riders to enjoy the convenience and benefits of micromobility. The result is a balanced approach that promotes both recreation and safety.

Important Note: This prohibition shall not apply to Motorized Mobility Devices used by disabled persons or public park personnel, or as otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
