BSO Weston Law Enforcement Personnel Recognized for Swift Action in Labor Trafficking Case

What began as a routine call for assistance with a disabled vehicle along Royal Palm Boulevard quickly unfolded into a critical human trafficking intervention, thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of Broward Sheriff’s Office personnel.

On November 8, 2024, Community Service Aide Jorge Esquivel responded to a report of a stranded vehicle occupied by two adult women and two five-year-old children. While assisting, one of the women discreetly revealed that she was being held against her will and needed help. The woman stated that she had been brought to the United States from Chile for employment as a caregiver but was never paid as promised. She further reported enduring verbal abuse, being denied the ability to leave, and that her passport and travel documents are being withheld by the other female occupant.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, CSA Esquivel remained composed and immediately requested deputy assistance. Deputies Carlos Martinez, Mike Belizaire, and Ariel Gonzalez promptly arrived at the scene, securing critical evidence and maintaining separation between the individuals to prevent further intimidation.

Detectives from BSO’s Human Trafficking Unit were notified and quickly responded to the scene. Throughout the investigation, all BSO personnel demonstrated professionalism and compassion, prioritizing the well-being of the victim and the children. The victim ultimately chose not to prosecute, instead expressing her desire to return to Chile. Understanding the complexities of labor trafficking cases, BSO deputies and detectives worked together to recover her passport and travel documents, while also arranging temporary shelter and essential resources. On November 11, the victim successfully returned to Chile, expressing deep gratitude for the assistance provided.

This case highlights the exceptional service and dedication of law enforcement in combatting human trafficking. Following BSO’s observance of Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January, it stands as a reminder of the agency’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and upholding justice.
