Scheduled maintenance is underway for Rinks 1 and 3 at Weston Regional Park, marking the first resurfacing since 2018. Weston’s Parks and Recreation Department is committed to maintaining the highest standards for recreational facilities, and this project is part of that plan. The resurfacing addresses normal wear such as divots and cracks that have accumulated over time. While this project has stirred community conversations, it is important to clarify what it actually entails and address any misunderstandings. 

Supporting Multi-Use Recreation for All Residents 

One key aspect of this project is our effort to enhance the flexibility of Rink 3, allowing it to be used for multiple sports. As part of the resurfacing process, Rink 3 will now include painted lines for six pickleball courts as well as general hockey lines to meet the demand noted in our Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The plan was adopted in 2023 after a two-year process that included significant public input and benchmarking.  

Rink 3 will remain a multi-use space.  No permanent pickleball equipment will be installed. Instead, players who wish to use it for pickleball will put up the temporary nets, which can be removed after play has concluded. This will keep the rink available for skating, hockey, and other recreational activities.  This is similar to the multipurpose court at Indian Trace Park, which has pickleball nets and lines available on the basketball court.  The outermost area of Rink 3 will remain free of striping to further facilitate skating and multi-sport use. 

A Dedicated Skating and Hockey Rink Remains Available 

Rink 1 will continue to be dedicated solely to hockey and skating.  

Supporting Fair Use and Access 

Another common question raised is regarding facility use. The City of Weston offers recreational classes through the use of instructor agreements. These agreements allow for the use of City facilities and amenities to host classes for the public. Instructors must provide insurance and agree to background checks. (Leagues that are part of the Weston Sports Alliance must also be not-for-profit organizations.) The instructor pays a program percentage to the City, which helps to maintain and manage our facilities for the benefit of all users. 

An example of a program that utilizes the rink space is the PedalYard program. PedalYard is dedicated to teaching children how to ride a bike without training wheels. This partnership serves as the first and only current instructor agreement on the rinks and allows PedalYard to offer scheduled classes on a dedicated day and time. 

Interested individuals or organizations are welcome to reach out to the Parks and Recreation Department to explore the opportunity to offer their own instructional classes as part of Weston’s recreational program offerings.  Rinks are open for public use on a first-come, first-serve basis whenever they are not being used through an instructor agreement.
