Summer 2024 in Weston 

There is no doubt you have noticed the extreme heat over the past 30-60 days. The heat, along with below-normal rainfall, has caused low water levels in our lakes and canals.  In turn, the lower water levels, high temperatures and longer days have spurred significant aquatic vegetative growth.  

The City of Weston is responsible for the cleaning of the lakes and they are on a schedule. 
All lakes and canals are being treated, on schedule, and Weston's Public Works professionals will get to the water body near you within the next couple weeks. 

There are approximately 1,844 acres of lakes and canals spread throughout the City of Weston.  Below are some of the commonly asked questions regarding Weston's lakes and canals. 

• Why do the city lakes have more growth during the summer months compared to the winter?
  The weather is warmer in the summer months; the water is warmer and the days are longer. Heavy fertilization of lawns can increase growth due to introduction of Phosphorus.
• Who is responsible for cleaning out the lakes?
  The City of Weston Public Works Department is responsible for lake and canal maintenance. You may contact Public Works at 954-385-2600.
• Why do some lakes have more vegetation than others?
  Some lakes have littoral shelves that could extend out 30 feet or more and some have more turbidity. For instance, the Bonaventure lakes have virtually no shelves, so there is less growth.
