From Halloween to New Year's, there is an abundance of sweets and celebrations with friends, family, and coworkers.  How to not overindulge is a time-honored quest.  Surviving the holiday food fest can be challenging, especially with the abundance of delicious but often unhealthy food options. However, with some planning and mindful choices, you can enjoy the festivities without compromising your health and well-being. Here are some tips to help you navigate the holiday food scene:

  1. Plan Ahead:

    • Eat a healthy and balanced meal before attending parties or gatherings. This can help you avoid overeating on less nutritious options.
    • Plan your holiday meals and snacks in advance, focusing on including a variety of nutrient-dense foods.

  2. Practice Portion Control:

    • Use smaller plates to help control portion sizes.
    • Try a small serving of different dishes rather than piling your plate high with one or two items.
    • Pay attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues. Stop eating when you're satisfied, not stuffed.

  3. Choose Wisely:

    • Opt for lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains when possible.
    • Be mindful of high-calorie, high-sugar, and high-fat dishes. Enjoy them in moderation.
    • Fill your plate with a variety of colors, which often indicates a diverse range of nutrients.

  4. Stay Hydrated:

    • Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Sometimes, our bodies can mistake thirst for hunger.
    • Consider alternating between water and other beverages to reduce overall calorie intake.

  5. Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption:

    • If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Alcohol can contribute to extra calories and impair judgment, leading to overeating.
    • Alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated.

  6. Stay Active:

    • Incorporate physical activity into your holiday routine. This can help counterbalance the extra calories and reduce stress.
    • Take a walk after meals or engage in other activities you enjoy.

  7. Listen to Your Body:

    • Pay attention to how certain foods make you feel. If you find yourself feeling sluggish or uncomfortable after eating a particular dish, consider making different choices next time.

  8. Bring a Healthy Dish:

    • If you're attending a potluck or family gathering, bring a nutritious dish to share. This ensures there's at least one healthy option available.
  9. Enjoy Mindfully:

    • Slow down and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help you recognize when you're satisfied and prevent overeating.

  10. Don't Skip Meals:

    • Skipping meals in an attempt to "save" calories for later can lead to overeating. Instead, eat regular, balanced meals to maintain steady energy levels.

The holidays are a time to enjoy good company and delicious food. With a balanced and mindful  approach, you can partake in the festivities while still taking care of your health.
