Public Works and Utilities services to the City are provided through a contract with Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Inc. Public Works services include the landscape, irrigation, pavement and drainage maintenance of the public rights-of-way, and the maintenance of the public water bodies. Utilities services include the maintenance of the water mains, sanitary sewer mains, and lift stations.

The water bodies within Weston are an integral part of the City's water management system. The water bodies provide storage for storm water runoff from roadways and other non-pervious areas. In the event of a known major storm event water bodies will be lowered to accommodate the increased runoff, and over time, the water bodies will be returned to their normal levels as the excess water from the storm event is pumped to the Everglades of the Atlantic Ocean. The vegetation in the water bodies adjacent to the banks are known as "littoral shelves", which provides food and nesting habitats for the birds, insects and fish indigenous to the area, and also acts as a cleansing area for the water running off the banks. Introduction of pollutants or other foreign matters into water bodies or the catch basins that flow to the water bodies is a violation of various laws and subject to prosecution.

Alligators –
As Weston is bordered by the Everglades, it is likely that at one time or another, you may see an alligator in or near the water bodies. Grates are in place on all four of the city’s main canals to prevent the movement of large alligators from the main canals to the interior lake system, but this does not eliminate the possibility of movement over land. May and June are their mating season and they tend to become more visible as they traverse between water bodies, seeking a mate. If you see one, stay calm. They generally have no intentions of bothering humans. Feeding, harassing, or killing alligators violate State law, so please leave them be. Be aware of your surroundings and carefully monitor small children and pets near the water, but continue to enjoy the uniqueness of our environment.

If an alligator appears threatening, comes close to your home, or becomes a risk for humans or pets, contact Alligator Control at 1-866-392-4286. Only nuisance alligators can be removed. The City is not permitted to handle an alligator for any reason.

Alligators are a part of Florida’s natural environment and play an important role in the State’s wetlands ecology.

Environment & Water Conservation

Watering Restrictions Now Permanent in Broward County
A permanent twice-a-week landscape watering schedule is now in place for County, city and private water customers in Broward County in an effort to conserve and protect local water resources. Even-numbered addresses are permitted to water on Thursday and/or Sunday and odd-numbered addresses can water on Wednesday and/or Saturday.

To promote and encourage residential participation and education on the environment and water conservation, please find below links to several local organizations dedicated to environment preservation and assisting Broward residents in creating Florida-friendly landscapes.
